Walter Gaffney Kessell
Walter Gaffney Kessell

Walter Gaffney Kessell has illustrated 18 children's books for Little Brown & Co., Harper & Row, Harcourt, Brace & Javonovich, Farrar Straus & Girioux and others. For many years he worked as an art director for advertising agencies in Connecticut, New Hampshire and Maine. Though he found his work rewarding, Mr. Kessell, born in Regensburg, Germany in 1954, decided to free himself from the pressures of corporate deadlines and pursue his love of painting.

Says Mr. Kessell, "A clock was always ticking in the back of my head, telling me that I'm running out of time and to take precious moments to observe simple things...a reflection in a window, a shadow, an expression, a sound or simply quiet. I feel that if I do not allow these things to reveal themselves to me, they will disappear. So, painting then becomes a way to hold on to them."

Mr. Kessell now lives in Maine with his wife and four children, where he continues to paint and illustrate children's books.
